What is Active fund?

An active fund uses manager decisions to select and weight investments rather than simply replicating a stated index.

How Active fund works

Its result reflects security selection, allocation, cash, trading and costs. The relevant comparison is an appropriate benchmark and category across consistent periods, including weak rolling windows rather than only the latest trailing return.

An example

If an active fund returns 11% while its comparable total-return benchmark returns 12%, it lagged by one percentage point for that period before broader risk analysis.

Why it matters for your family

Families pay for a process that may differ from an index, not for guaranteed outperformance. Examine consistency, downside, cost and the reason the fund belongs in the plan.
