How your date of retirement is worked out

For government employees, the date of retirement is the last day of the month in which you reach the retirement age. Fundamental Rule 56 sets this for central government service: you retire in the afternoon of that day, so a birthday on the 15th of the month still means a full month's salary. The one exception is a birthday on the 1st, where retirement moves to the last day of the month before.

The private sector has no single rule

No central law fixes a private-sector retirement date. Your company's policy, standing orders or appointment letter decides it, and many retire you on the birthday itself or at the end of that month. Use the birthday option above if your policy is silent on month-end.

Your retirement date is not your pension date

The day your salary stops and the day your pensions start are set by different systems. The EPS pension normally begins at 58, NPS income at exit, and your own savings whenever they can carry you. The retirement age in India guide sets out each one, and the retirement calculator shows the chance your savings last from the date above.

Frequently asked questions

How is the date of retirement calculated for government employees?

Under Fundamental Rule 56, a central government employee retires on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which they reach the retirement age. If the date of birth is the 1st of a month, retirement falls on the last day of the previous month. So someone born on 15 March 1966 retires on 31 March 2026, and someone born on 1 March 1966 retires on 28 February 2026.

What is the retirement age in India?

There is no single age. Most central government employees retire at 60, private companies set their own age by policy or contract, often 58 to 60, and pensions start at their own ages: the EPS pension normally at 58. Our guide to the retirement age in India covers each one.

Does the private sector use the same month-end rule?

Not necessarily. There is no law fixing a private-sector retirement date. Many company policies retire you on the birthday itself or at the end of that month; your appointment letter, HR policy or standing orders will say which. Use the birthday option if your policy does not mention a month-end.

Why does the 1st of the month change the date?

Because a person born on the 1st completes their years on the last day of the previous month, in the way Indian service rules count age. That is why Fundamental Rule 56 makes a special case of it.
