How to use the Asset Allocation calculator
Use the output as an illustrative range by goal horizon, then test whether the goal can survive a market fall near its due date. It is not a SEBI risk profile or personalised advice.
- Choose one goalA retirement goal and a house deposit need separate horizons and separate allocations.
- Enter years remainingThe calculator reduces reliance on equity when the money is needed sooner, and shows no equity for goals two years away or less.
- Set risk capacityCapacity means the financial ability to absorb loss, not excitement about higher returns.
- Plan the glide pathMove goal money toward debt and cash as the withdrawal date approaches rather than waiting until the final year.
Allocation is a goal decision
Asset allocation divides a goal across growth assets, stabilising assets and liquidity. It usually matters more than finding last year's highest-returning fund because it determines how much volatility the goal experiences and how much expected return it can reasonably seek.
Run the calculator separately for each important goal. Combining a two-year house deposit and twenty-year retirement corpus into one percentage hides the fact that the same market fall has very different consequences.
Treat the output as a range
The calculator shows a band – for example 45–65% equity for a twelve-year goal at medium capacity – rather than one precise percentage. It uses only horizon and a three-level capacity input. It cannot see job stability, future contributions, pensions, concentrated stock, property, debt or whether the goal date can move. Those facts can justify a mix outside the band. It is an illustration by goal horizon, not a SEBI risk profile or personalised advice, and it does not recommend a security or promise a return.
Reduce sequence risk near the goal
A long horizon can allow time for recovery; a withdrawal due next month cannot. Create a glide path that gradually moves the amount needed soon into suitable debt and cash. Review the entire household balance sheet and read the product riskometer before investing.
This calculator is educational and uses the inputs shown. Read the related terms in the nyvo money glossary and consider regulated advice for decisions that depend on your full finances.
Frequently asked questions
Is risk capacity the same as risk appetite?
No. Appetite is how comfortable you feel with fluctuations. Capacity is whether your income, horizon, liabilities and goal flexibility allow you to absorb a loss. A household can feel aggressive but still have low capacity for a goal due next year.
Why does a short goal have more cash?
Cash and near-cash reduce the chance that a forced sale after a market fall prevents a near-term payment. The trade-off is lower expected return. For goals two years away or less the illustration holds no equity at all.
How often should I rebalance?
A periodic review, such as annually, or a material drift band can both work. Avoid reacting to every market move. Taxes, exit loads and the goal date matter before trading.
