How Depository participant (DP) works

The depository maintains the infrastructure while the participant services the account, instructions and records. A broker can also be a DP, but trading and depository charges or responsibilities are distinct.

An example

When ETF units are bought on exchange, they settle into the investor's demat account serviced through the DP rather than a mutual-fund folio.

Why it matters for your family

Families should preserve account details and nomination, review charges and use official channels for changes. Never share passwords or OTPs with an intermediary's representative.
