Plain-English definition

What is Expense ratio?

An expense ratio is the annual percentage of a mutual fund's assets used to pay its operating and management costs.

How Expense ratio works

It is deducted inside the fund rather than billed separately, so the NAV and return you see are already after this cost. Direct and regular plans of the same scheme hold the same portfolio, but the regular plan normally has a higher ratio because it includes distributor commission.

The figure should always be read with its measurement period, product type and source. A precise-looking number can still answer the wrong question when two unlike products or time periods are compared.

A rupee example

At 1% a year, a ₹10 lakh balance implies roughly ₹10,000 of cost in the first year; the actual rupee amount moves with the daily portfolio value.

The example isolates one idea so the arithmetic is visible. Real outcomes can include taxes, fees, cash-flow timing and market movement that the simplified example does not model.

Why it matters for your family

Small annual gaps compound over long goals. Compare the same scheme and plan type, then weigh switching costs such as tax and exit load before changing an existing holding.

Connect the figure to a dated goal before acting. Money for an emergency or near-term payment has different constraints from retirement money, even when the product description quotes the same statistic.
