Plain-English definition

What is Macaulay duration?

Macaulay duration is the weighted average time, in years, until a bond's cash flows are received.

How Macaulay duration works

Each coupon and principal payment is weighted by its present value. Modified duration derives price sensitivity from this timing measure, while average maturity simply averages final maturity dates.

The figure should always be read with its measurement period, product type and source. A precise-looking number can still answer the wrong question when two unlike products or time periods are compared.

An example

A five-year bond paying coupons before maturity can have a Macaulay duration below five years because part of the value arrives earlier.

Why it matters for your family

The measure helps families understand when a debt investment's cash flows effectively arrive, but it does not remove credit or reinvestment risk.

Connect the figure to a dated goal before acting. Money for an emergency or near-term payment has different constraints from retirement money, even when the product description quotes the same statistic.
