What is Sum assured?

Sum assured is the stated life-insurance benefit amount used under the policy terms for a covered claim.

How Sum assured works

It differs from premium, surrender value and the amount invested. Riders or product formulas can alter total benefits, while exclusions and accurate disclosures determine whether a claim is payable.

A rupee example

A policy with ₹50 lakh sum assured may charge a much smaller annual premium; paying that premium does not create a ₹50 lakh savings balance.

The example isolates one idea so the arithmetic is visible. Real outcomes can include taxes, fees, cash-flow timing and market movement that the simplified example does not model.

Why it matters for your family

Size cover from the family's income gap, debts and goals rather than a round headline. Recheck after a new child, loan or material income change.
