How Mutual-fund switch works

Although shown as one instruction, it generally contains a redemption and a fresh purchase. Exit load, capital-gains tax, different NAV dates and time out of market can apply; switching regular to direct is not a costless relabelling.

A rupee example

If units worth ₹3 lakh carry ₹60,000 of taxable gain, a switch can realise that gain even though the money remains within the same AMC.

The example isolates one idea so the arithmetic is visible. Real outcomes can include taxes, fees, cash-flow timing and market movement that the simplified example does not model.

Why it matters for your family

Compare the one-time switching cost with the expected future benefit and the family's holding period. A lower expense ratio may take time to recover tax or load paid today.
