How Volatility works
It is often estimated with standard deviation, but that measure treats upside and downside variation alike. Low volatility does not eliminate credit, liquidity or inflation risk.
The figure should always be read with its measurement period, product type and source. A precise-looking number can still answer the wrong question when two unlike products or time periods are compared.
An example
Two portfolios can both average 10% while one moves between 8% and 12% and another between −20% and 40%; their investor experience is very different.
Why it matters for your family
Use volatility with goal timing and capacity for loss. Stable-looking returns can still fail a family if they do not outpace inflation.
Connect the figure to a dated goal before acting. Money for an emergency or near-term payment has different constraints from retirement money, even when the product description quotes the same statistic.
