How Net worth works

Assets can include cash, investments and property; liabilities include loans and unpaid obligations. The number is a balance-sheet snapshot, not monthly cash flow or spendable money.

A rupee example

A family with ₹80 lakh of assets and ₹35 lakh of loans has net worth of ₹45 lakh, although much of it may be illiquid home equity.

The example isolates one idea so the arithmetic is visible. Real outcomes can include taxes, fees, cash-flow timing and market movement that the simplified example does not model.

Why it matters for your family

Tracking the components is more useful than chasing a headline number. Liquidity, insurance, goal funding and debt cost can improve even when market prices temporarily reduce net worth.
