How Loan principal works

Each qualifying repayment can reduce principal, while interest is calculated under the contract on the relevant outstanding balance. The sanctioned amount, disbursed amount and current principal can therefore differ.

A rupee example

If ₹10 lakh is borrowed and ₹1 lakh of principal has been repaid, the outstanding principal is ₹9 lakh before any additional borrowing or adjustment.

The example isolates one idea so the arithmetic is visible. Real outcomes can include taxes, fees, cash-flow timing and market movement that the simplified example does not model.

Why it matters for your family

Track principal rather than only EMI count. It shows how much debt remains and helps compare prepayment with keeping cash for other family priorities.
