How Risk tolerance works

Questionnaires can estimate it, but behaviour during a real drawdown may differ from an answer given in calm markets. Tolerance should be considered with objective risk capacity and the risk a goal actually requires.

An example

An investor who says a 20% fall is acceptable but sells after a 10% decline has discovered a lower practical tolerance than the questionnaire suggested.

Why it matters for your family

A family plan should be survivable emotionally as well as mathematically. Taking less risk and continuing can be better than taking more and abandoning the plan in stress.
