A Sovereign Gold Bond is a government security denominated in grams of gold and issued under the terms of a specific RBI-notified tranche.

How Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) works

It is not physical gold. Price exposure, interest, maturity, secondary-market liquidity and tax treatment follow the issue and current law. No new tranche has been issued since the 2023-24 Series IV in February 2024, so today the practical route is buying existing bonds on a stock exchange, where they trade even though no subscription window is open.

An example

Ten units representing ten grams change in market value with gold prices and trading conditions; the exchange price can differ from the reference value.

Why it matters for your family

Families should not wait on or assume a new issue. Check RBI announcements before planning around one, and when buying an existing listed bond, match its remaining maturity and liquidity with the goal.
